Molybdenum Rods

General Information
Molybdenum rods are formed into rods, after the refractory metal molybdenum is sintered. Thereby, they acquire the metal’s significant properties. High melting and boiling point, robustness, high resistance to corrosion and high temperatures, low thermal expansion etc, are the qualities that it possesses, which makes it a beneficial product.
Molybdenum rods can then further be used to manufacture wires, small crucibles and tubes, electrodes, ingots (rods that have a larger diameter than the standard rod size) etc. Generally, lanthanated molybdenum rods are used for high temperature functions as it retains its high ductile property after the rods are recrystallised.
Molybdenum rods are produced at random lengths which are then cut into the required sizes. It comes in three types of surface processes, they are: –
Black-surface – these are coated with lubricants and oxides used for production process
Clean-surface – the processing lubricants and oxides are cleaned chemically
Ground-surface – the coatings are removed, with the focus on getting specific targets diameters.

Key Features
Molybdenum is a refractory material that can withstand high temperatures, even higher than steel and nickel alloys. Due to its oxidation at low temperatures, it is best to use Molybdenum Crucibles in vacuum. Significant features include –
- High purity
- High creep resistance
- High dimensional stability
- Low co-efficient of thermal expansion
- Good thermal conductivity
- Good electrical conductivity
- Good stiffness, greater than that of steel
- High melting point (2622 °C)
- High boiling point (4639 °C)
- High red-hardness
- Good strength and ductility
- High density
Applications
Molybdenum rods can be shortened and reformed into other molybdenum products which increases its diversity in applications, they are used: –
- As additives for steel-making process
- As Electrode, Stirring Rod, Protective Cover for manufacturing variety of glass products such as regular drinking glass, optical glass, glass fibre (Tungsten and Platinum are very expensive for this application)
- To make electric vacuum parts
- To make gas pipes
- To reshape it into wires, electrodes, tubes and small crucibles
Molybdenum rods are commonly used in various industries, like:
- Furnace Manufacturing
- Heater Manufacturing
- Electrode Manufacturing
- Automotive
- Aerospace
- Metal Industry
- Metallurgy
- Stainless steel and Steel Industry
- Solar Cell
- Fuel Cell
- Energy Storage
- Nanotechnologies
- Electronic
